Players skate around an oval track. The goal is to skate in a tight pack, working together to score points while stop the other team from scoring. Each team has 5 players in the pack:

  • 1 jammer, who tries to pass the other players and is the only player who scores points
  • 3 blockers, who try to keep the other team’s jammer from passing the pack
  • 1 pivot, who stays in front of the blockers and directs them to go faster or slower play is divided into 2-minute periods or jams.

Before a jam starts, the teams line up side-by-side: pivots first, blockers behind them and jammers at the back. When the whistle blows, the pivots and blockers start to skate around the track. when the second whistle blows, the jammers race to catch up to the pack. The first jammer to get through the pack without leaving the track becomes the lead jammer. The lead jammer’s team gets a point every time she passes one of the other team’s players. The lead jammer can choose to stop the jam early if she wants to. Blockers & pivots try to help their own team’s jammer get through the pack while slowing down the other jammer. Players may push using the shoulders and arms, hips or upper legs. Illegal moves such as tripping, shoving, punching or pushing can lead to penalties. A match, or bout, takes about 60 to 90 minutes.Teams skate as many jams as they can until time runs out. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
